1985 Yamaha Badger 80 Wont Start
Hello all. Great information on this forum from what I have read so far.
I have a 1985 Badger 80 that I picked up almost a year ago to follow my son around on his LT50 quad. The quad runs great once running but lately has given me a lot of trouble starting up. Finally it will not start.
The battery has a good charge, ccp is 120, carb is clean, spark appears to be adequate.
I guess im wondering what the problem can be. It seems to be getting fuel. Petcock works fine. I am thinking it must be spark related but am really not sure how to check if the spark is enough. Is there a way to measure coil output. And if so, what is an acceptable range?
Any other ideas come to mind, thanks?

Btw, is ccp compression? if so and if you measure in psi the minimum spec is 142psi, standard is 171psi.
I just bought a 1987 moto-4 80. It did not start either, it had low compression due to no valve clearance on the intake valve. I adjusted that and it fired right up.
The clearance should be 0.003 - 0.005 in. on both valves when the engine is cold.
If you don't have a compression tester, remove the spark plug and put your finger in the hole. Run the starter and if you have enough compression you should finger should be blown away. I could quite easy hold my finger there when i run the starter.

The cold compression was 120 lbs. I thought I read that 100 was the minimum. Should it be 142 minimum? If the valves are too tight,
Do you by any chance have a procedure on how to adjust them?

I saw the ones at sears online but didn't know they came with that adapter.
I was actually looking for just the adapter. My buddy has the tester, so all I need is an adapter. I just bought my daughter a 95 badger 80cc. I got it to start after adjusting the valves...It's hard to start and the finger test is telling me the compression is low. I just want to be sure. thanks for the info.
