May want to do an leak down test on engine to see crank bearings are bad..Also may want to check to see if intake manifold is ok.PLz give more history on this atv...Was it running like this when you got it? did you just trade for it? has it been going down little by little? Thanks

you answered your own question- a lean carb will cause the motor to pop & backfire.
clean your jets.

I just purchased it from my father in law it had maybe 20 hours on the engine however it was leaking out fuel from the overflow tubes on one side so we took the carbs apart and cleaned them we reassembled them however it started running off one cylinder so we took them apart again started from bolt one and then came the backfiring/popping issue and one side started running lean we have set the air/fuel mixture to 1-1/2 turn out I can't figure out the tuning of the bike is where I believe my problem is. We switched plug wires to see of the backfiring side changed and it didnt so the problem is in my card I am running dmc pipes and silencers

if your carbs aren't synchronized one cylinder could be working harder than the other causing a backfire through one of the pipes
