Default Possible upgrades????

So me and my friends like to go mudding but we only have stock atv's and we were wondering what upgrades we could do to make them more capable in the mud. My friend owns a 400 yamaha kodiak automatic with the push button 4x2/4x4. While mudding we discovered that it seemed to bog down a bit and we, not knowing how deep the water really was, ended up ***-deep in some water. the water had gotten itself into the belt on the side where we drained it out and flushed it, the atv wouldn't move due to the water/mud inside. We wanted to keep the budget small but we want it capable of going through deep water and able to sling mud with no power loss while in 4x4. the only "upgrades" he has done is added some itp mud lite tires to it. I've heard of changing the belt to a more aggressive one but haven't done that yet. I'm pretty mechanical smart and have a wide variety of tools and man power to do any modifications myself. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Extend the breather tubes to the belt housing if you plan on serious mudding. Lots of how too on youtube about it.

When it started bogging did you have it in low range?

In thick mud use low range and it will not bog.
