Exclamation Valve "Ticking"

Hi,

Was wondering if I should just buy the service manual to adjust the valves on my 1999 Bear Tracker 250 2x4 or is it not that hard to do? (I have done it on my Polaris machines before). There is a "ticking" sound comming from the engine (not at idle)when the engine is reved up a bit. There is 10w-30 oil in it. Was thinking of going to a higher weight oil. I cant imagine using only 10w-30 in a just free air cooled engine (no oil cooler) But that is what the manual calls for in our given temperature range. Can I use full synthetic oil in the machine?>? or is that bad for the clutch setup?

Thanks!
