Hey fellas,
Im new to the forum here and I just bought a 2009 yamaha grizzly 550 with 15 hours on it, and man this thing has gone above and beyond what i expected. got it from an estate sale. Old man had it and died, his wife needed the money so here we are. its got 27 itp mudlites and ss rims. never owned a yamaha before (mostly arctic cats). but have heard solid things about them. my question is, are there any good performance mods for these things. i just want to maybe let it breathe a little easier and open the exhaust up a bit. nothing extreme.
Like i said guys new to yamaha, the forum, let me know what works for yall?
thanks in advance
Dude those grizzly's kick some ass. Brothers got one and he goes hunting every weekend. Hes got a set of mudlites on them and you would be shocked to see what mud he gets through on the beast. It goes way better then my dads 1999 Honda foreman.
With your machine and 27" tires a clutch would be a good investment. It will help make up for the power loss of the bigger tires you have on. Check out the why I need a clutch video on the epi website (click on the the playground for the video). www.epiperformance.com
If you want to help the bike 3 things are a must for bigger tires a Clutch kit, Exhaust kit, and a EFI contoller. Most exaust Co. will have a option of a controller to go with there exaust systems!

I appreciate the input guys. I went riding this weekend, and I really think a clutch kit is going to be first. It rides really nice but bogs down when taking really steep grades or deep mud and water. Its not bad but my buddy's got a can-am 800 and that thing can power its way out of any mess. Just about out from underneath his butt! I dont want serious power I just want the low end back. I mostly use it to hunt but i like to ride some pretty hairy trails. Do you guys know what all EPI's kit includes? (weights, springs, etc.) I'm pretty mechanically inclined, is it something i can take care of myself? Thanks alot guys!
EPI's kit will include the roller weights, internal wet clutch springs, and the secondary clutch spring (which is all the parts you can change and tune in the yamaha clutches). It comes with step by step instructions, it will probably take a first timer 3-4 hours to install. Usually around two hours if you have done them before. You will need some type of spring compresser to compress the secondary spring. EPI sells a tool (part # CCT510) that works on yamahas and all the other brands or you can rig up something on your own. Other then that pretty much your basic shop tools are needed to install.
Well I guess thats that. From all Ive seen EPI is the way to go. EPIChad, do you work for them or somethin? I went to their website and theve got several so i guess i should go with the Utility kit?
thanks again for the info.
Yes, I do work there. I work in product development and help with the tech dept. For all around use including trail riding, working, and mudding I would recommend the Sport Utility Kit for 27-28" tires. If your riding from 0-3000 ft elevation use Part # WE436633 which is the clutch kit or part # WE436644 which is the clutch kit and EPI Severe Duty belt.
The utility kit is designed more for people who just use their machine for working all the time and not so much trail riding.

Your buddy has 30 extra HP with his 800 so you will never match him,and does he have 27" wheels? In steep grades, mud and water where you in low range? I,m not a fan of 27" wheels on a mid class ATV it just robs way to much power. Try aggressive 25" XL Mud lights, your 550 will feel like a 700 and you will fly up those steep grades even in high range.
