Default Belt Life Question

I picked up a 2001 Grizzly 600 from my parents with only 550 miles on it. Last weekeknd I went trail riding, mostly old railroad grades, and put on about 150 miles. I noticed a slight burning rubber smell when I stopped after running the long stretches. Is that an indication of a belt issue? Does the belt wear with age as well as use? If I need to replace it is it an easy operation? Thanks in advance for any help.

It's probably dried out and hard as a rock because of it's age and lack of use. You should be able to change it in about one hour.

Thank you for the help. Is the replacement a major undertaking or can most anyone handle it?

As long as you have the basic tool set you can do it without much problems. It might even be listed in your owners manual on some models. Helpful hint is to thread one of the clutch cover bolts into the secondary clutch (the one on the transmisson) to open that clutch and loosen the belt tension. Thread the bolt in one of the holes near the center of the clutch nut to the bolt that holds the clutch on.

Yes they are an ok belt. You can get better ones but they will cost a little more (depending on which one you bought)

No, I left the wheeler up at the hunting shack and will probably go get it this weekend. I still need to go buy the belt and then I will try to figure out how to replace it. The owners manual does not help.

Replacing the belt is in the shop manual.... it SHOULD be in the owners manual.. but Yamaha want you to take it to the STEALERSHIP and get charged $65-$85 and hour to replace it...

Here is a link to an older post I replied to regarding belt replacement and a picture of the page from my service manual.

Installing a drive belt for a 660 YAMAHA.???
