Question 1998 350 Big Bear 4X4 shifting question

Hello, I'm new here and have a question about my big bear. It is hard to get it to shift out of reverse most of the time. Usually, when it does come out of reverse, it jumps past neutral into 1st gear. Other than that it shifts quite well. Can anyone give me advice as to what I need to do to make it better? Also, what does the clutch freeplay adjustment actually do? I have adjusted it and don't see much change in anything. Thank you in advance.

I have the same problem with my 2000-400 Big Bear. I only seem to have the problem when it's cold out and when the atv is not warmed up. I read somewhere to make sure warmed up at an idle for awhile, and wait until at normal operating temp before trying to shift. Usually I had this problem during the winter when plowing snow. However, It has not been consistant problem to be sure of anything, but it seems to help.

I have a 2001 big bear 400,, 2x4 very hard to shift into higher ranges. I could use ideas also. I just bought this unit used. so I know NO history on it. Plan on experimenting with oils/brands/weights. then order clutches?
