to wildwest1011 I checked the switch on the left handle and found that the little plastic clip that is supposed to hold the switch in place was broken and the switch had backed out about 1/8" energizing the brake lite all the time. When I pushed it back in everything worked fine!!
I am going to drill a very small hole through the housing where the switch goes and then put in a very small/short self tapping screw just long enough to slightly penetrate the switch to hold it in place.
