Default Very Hot brand new YZF450

everything is a little tight now but after the first oil change it will feel like you gained a gear. You might want to switch to synthetic oil as well. it will cost you 5 bucks more every 6 months but the improvement is worth it.

Hey..

New to this forum and thought that I'd help the little brother out.. I ride a Honda but he just bought a brand new YFZ450 today and when he got it home began running it around his place to get it broken in a bit. After it got a little dark we notice that the header was getting RED hot. Realized that the fan wasn't running at all after we had run it for a while (really pretty easy) just going around the property running through the gears, etc. He and I are thinking that theres something wrong with it and wonder if this new engine got hot enough to damage it? Any one ever seen anything like this on the new YZF450's?

Dude, the dealer will jack you around. I'm sure if the fan wasn't running and you rode for a while there will be irreversible damage. Depends though. I would take it in and explain the situation. They most likely will pull the engine apart(decreasing value of the bike tremendously) and take a peek. Whether there is engine damage or not, they will say "looks good" and hand it back to you. Sounds like it could be a lemon. My buddy just spent 2 months back and forth with the dealer and it's no fun. After all that he got a new bike.....But you better be prepared for a battle. They won't back down until you shove a lawyer in their face.

Now, my 450, although it's suzuki runs real lean and glows at night too. So, if it's broken, it's broken. If not, it's just running a tad lean. I think they do that on break in. Not sure though. Never had to do it myself......

all the yfz glow. I had my pipe ceramic coated and it glows half way down the header now. What a difference It made for heat on my leg though. Droped 80 degrees external temp.

If the fan didn't come on, it probably wasn't running hot enough... even with the header glowing. That new engine is gonna seem like its running hotter during burn in. (Just like the exhaust is gonna smell different in the beginning)

my yamaha 450r came with a 6 month warranty from yamaha and i would not worry at all regardless of jetting the yfz header pipe will glow the engines just run hotter than others. my 06 would start turning red at night the day we broke it in and so does my 09 and its fuel injected bikes usually arent leaned out when they come out of the factory due to all of the restrictive exhaust i wouldn't worry at all about the head pipe it is perfectly normal

Yea, it's common for the yamaha head pipes to glow on the raptors and YFZ's, add an aftermarket headpipe and it will glow a lot more.
Just because the headpipe glows does not mean the engine itself is hot, those are the exhaust temps causing the header to glow, not the coolant temp.
