All of a sudden my top speed has dropped to 35 mph.
I have flooded the drive belt housing a few times but have always drained it ASAP.
So, I took the belt cover off and it is pretty clean in there and the belt looks good.
The engine RPM seems to be ok.
Any suggestions?
thanks

Have you cleaned and re-oiled the airfilter? If it is plugged up, it wont be able to suck enough air in to rev out.

yes I have check the air filter, it looks to be ok.
It seems to be reving up plenty. It sounds like it is over reved, like the belt is slipping.
But the belt seems to be fine.

Youre gonna need to relube the weights in the primary pulley. You cant see them when assembled, but once you take it apart, youll see how the grease has flung out, and how gritty and dirty the grease is, that is left in there.

Dude there's a cover over the clutch that needs to be removed so you can service (grease) the weights. Over the couple of swampings, there has been fine silt or mud that has seeped into the clutch and is now not allowing the wieghts to fully engage the clutch.

It's pretty simple to do once you get the cover off. The cover is held on by a dozen or so phillips screws and has a gasket around it, when you take it off the mud inside will probably be packed in so hard it will look like the same shape as the cover does.

I've seen this on two or three different occasions and we just cleaned all the desbris out of the clutch and started sprayin' penetrating oil to flush out the remaining silt we couldn't see. Then we re-greased the slides where the weights moved on with some regular grease and bingo-bango-bongo... it worked!!!

Keep in mind I'm not a Yamaha mechanic, but I'll never let a broken bike ruin a days worth of ridin' so if it ain't runnin' and we're leavin' for a rip-er-oonie I'll do whatever I think I'm capable of to get out there with the boys. (Oh and sometimes girls.)

Yeah man... just remember... if you take out a dozen bolts... you just have to find the spots for a dozen bolts to go back on... easy as pie!!! Not that I've made a lot of pie... but er, ah, or, so I've heard... it's easy.

Its easy to clean and relube the clutch. Use Yamaha Ultramatic grease on the rollers. Your local dealer will have it in stock.
