A friend of mine is going to buy either a Yamaha Big Bear 250 or a Honda Recon 250. I own a Recon 250 that has been very reliable and I have no problem recomending it, but the specifications of the Yamaha are impressive. (front disk brakes, fuel capacity, towing/rack capacity) Just looking for some input about reliability and performance.

i have a recon and would suggest a recon by the way normally posting on a Yamaha forum they will probably say the Yamaha and i think that Yamaha is great but i have never rode a Big Bear 250

 

I have a Bear Tracker 250 (aka Big Bear 250) and it has been ultra reliable and goes through some pretty amazing stuff for a 2X4. It's an '03 with a front discs and a rear drum.

 

The Honda 250 beats the Yam 250 hands down. Trust me I've had about 100 Yams and 1 Honda and I'd buy the Honda every time. (Even with front drum brakes!)

The 230cc Yamaha engine has been around since the mid 80s it was called a Moto4 than a Bear Tracker now they call it a Big Bear. The are so many 1980s 250 Moto4s still running around that I quit counting them. Recons are just as reliable, price would be my deciding factor between the two.

Pretty well all simple no thrill 250 2wd ATVs are super reliable because there is not alot to them. A guy with a 84 Suzuki 125 still comes on our fishing trips and that was the first 4 wheeler made!

LOL a shootout between 250 2wd utilities is like arguing who's wheel barrel is better.

Here are the two ATVs side by side.

If I had to choose between the two I would go with the Yamaha just because it cost less,has a larger gas tank,larger carb might mean more power and it has disk brakes in the front not drums.

Agreed. Suzuki all the way for me. I've got lots of Z250's and they are an awesome Trail bike.

Supposedly better than the Honda 250EX I've heard. Anyone else second that?

It may here is a link z250 vs 250ex

The z250 has more cc and a larger 29mm carb . It also has longer suspention for less money as well.

Honda has to thank there luck stars that there loyal customers do not shop around.
