That last post is right on the money. You may be able to get the load moving, but it's more important to get it stopped!
My Explorer has a 4.0, 5 speed and 4.56 gears with 35" tires. It hauls 2 quads on a 5x10 trailer OK. I wouldn't attempt a bigger trailer with more quads on it. Granted, the weight of the tires hurts my towing alot.
You can find Explorer rearends in the junkyard. Get one with 3.73s or 4.10s and disc brakes. Explorers after 1995 had rear disc brakes...a big improvement over the drums. They are also 8.8" which is a pretty stout rearend.
Out of curiosity, why are you pulling all those quads? Five or six quads means five or six riders, and they aren't going to all fit in that Ranger. They will need to bring another vehicle just to haul the people, so let them haul some quads too!
I have an 1999 explorer 4.0 sohc and 5sp auto. has the towing package with 3.73 rear. I haul a 4x8 trailer with just one AC400. the trailer loaded weights about 1250lbs and on flat lands, I don't notice it back there. But climbing hills I take it out of overdrive and it climbs pretty good (50-55mph at 2500rpm). I get 19.5mpg but drive 65mph or less.

Will a ATV fit on the bed of a 93+ ranger? I'm also looking at getting one. I've done some research and it seems they are good trucks to tow with, however its the breaks that will hold it back. Tow rating is about 5200lbs. THey say that it should be alright for towing a good 4000lbs but leave yourself A LOT of room to break. And if you have to panic break...the trailer will try and pass you.
I'm getting mine to two two ATVs, a 16' boat, and my piece of crap mustang cobra when it breaks at the track.
If you plan on towing that many quads, I'd seriously look into getting a heavy duty tranny oil cooler and possibly a bigger radiator. Cooler is better [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

Also, RogerL - you should NEVER EVER tow in OD. Always take it out of OD...even if its an empty trailer. Hell, in my mom's expedition, I take it out of OD if I carry more than 3 or more extra people. It just keeps the converter and shift mechanisms from having to work so much.
pretty much any ATV will fit in the bed of a ranger. Mine just barely fit in the bed of my friends dads 94 ranger due to the 50" wheel stance but hey, it fit!
Well, I traded my explorer for an 2000 Toyota Tundra quad cab 4x4 with the 4.7 V-8 and the towing package. I need a pick-up that will hold a atv in the bed and tow a medium size travel tailer (16-22 ft) Which I would like to buy one this spring.

rangers are excellent little trucks. the 4.0 is plenty of motor for that trailer, and with a 5 speed manual youre good to go. if its an automatic (A4LD), i highly suggest that you get a big trans cooler and dont tow in overdrive. 4.10 gears wouldnt hurt either and trailer brakes are definatley gonna be needed.
