89 quadrunner
Hey guys
I just bought an 89 quadrunner for $400. He said its been sitting since 2011, It came with a blade (assuming its for it). Anyway I cleaned the rat nest out of the airbox, cleaned the tank also tore down the carb for good measure. It took a few tugs but it fired up and purrs like a kitten. I jumped on it all gun ho and it wouldn't move in high or low. It does move in super low though. I pulled the clutch cover and I believe the centrifugal is toast (pads worn, grooved) and that looks simple to change. The reason i'm here is what I assume is a secondary clutch, should I replace it while i'm in there? Do they come assembled? It almost looks like a clutch pack in a car rearend. Can I buy an entire kit, is the quad itself worth putting money into? Any recommendations where to buy from if so?

The centrifugal clutch usually works fine until the shoes are worn to the metal, as soon as the metal part starts to touch the drum the clutch will loose grip. New shoes or complete centres are expensive as aftermarket makers don’t seem to sell them.
On the conventional motorcycle type secondary clutch, you can check plate thickness, warping and spring length if you have a micrometer or vernier and a workshop manual. For some reason plate kits are a lot easier to get, and cheaper, for these secondary clutches. Are you sure the gearchange cable is adjusted correctly? Those old Suzukis were known for cable stretch causing problems.

I cant say i'm 100% sure..I cracked the nut loose, tightened the screw till i felt pressure, back it off a tad and re tightened. Is it possible it can be that far out of adjustment that it wont even attempt to move with tires off the ground? Is the grooving normal? The pads look thin and brittle. I cant get the nut off either is there trick to it, I tried a breaker bar and impact. It was horribly maintained, I changed the oil twice already and it came out sludge green both times. I will google and check ebay for prices I reckon.
thanks
