Default 86 LT230s clutch issue

I recently replaced the friction plates and springs on my 86 LT230s, put it all back together and it shifts fine, only problem being I am not holding the clutch when it shifts...

When the bike is on and I shift from N to 1 it stalls, so the clutch is not being engaged... but again with the bike off I can cycle through 1N2345 without holding the clutch. Any idea what I may have missed here? or if there's something else that could be wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated

Also I soaked the friction pads in oil before I installed them, but had other things to do on the motor before I filled it with oil. They probably sat for a week or two. Could this issue be because the pads are sticking?

When you pull in the lever for the clutch, does it feel normal? Like it takes a certain amount of effort to pull or is it super easy to pull. You might not have put everything together correctly.

You are holding the clutch when you shift from n to 1st correct?

The clutch lever felt normal, but the gears were able to shift without the clutch being engaged. Yesterday I was holding the clutch, shifted from N to 1 and it stalled. I think the issue was the plates sticking, because today I had a chance to let the motor get nice and warm and it was shifting with no issues.
