I have a 2003 Suzuki Z400 as well, It has no spark anytime. Did the engine make any sounds when you were trying to start it from the broke flywheel bolts? I am going to pull the cover and check the bolts or order a CDI unit, I cant find any wires pulled out of the CDI like other people has said goes wrong.

well i wouldnt order the cdi until you pull the cover off, because if that ends up being the issue, then it was money wasted for the cdi the engine made a ticking noise like a valve tapping, but sometimes the sound wouldnt happen, it just depended where the head of the bolt was sitting, i would pull the cover off and check that first, but drain the oil or youll have a mess

Well..... I pulled the flywheel cover and everything looked good. I checked the torque on the bolts and they all where tight. So I ordered a used CDI from E-bay for $35.00 w/free shipping and a new cover gasket. They can in the same day so installed the new gasket, filled it back up with oil and put the used CDI on and............Wait for it....... VRRROOOOOMMMMM!!!!!!!! It Started........... I have been riding the hell out of it the last week or so and it runs great. Thanks for all your input.

My good buddy had a z400 and the flywheel bolts broke and flywheel was able to be spin. he bought new hardend allen bolts from hardware store.
I don't know if this is a common problem or not but maybe worth a shot to inspect and see whats up.
I just got an 03 Z400 the other day. The bike ran flawless till today. I was riding it up on the left 2 wheels for about 20 seconds and it died. Would get spark for a second but only after switching the ignition on and off. I took your advice and took the stator cover off. I discovered 2 broken bolts and one very destroyed stator! Thanks for your input!! I ordered another stator and it will be here friday!
