Default How do I rebuild my clutch? 1986 lt250r.

Hello everyone!

So I just got a 86 250r on a trade. Overall sweet quad and in good shape. The guy before me gave me a Barnette clutch kit cause he said when he first got it it felt like it was slipping. Well I drove the quad now a few times a it had felt fine. I swapped out the old grey oil in the trans for some fresh ATF type F that I heard was good to use. After the test drive it was fine. Then the other day I noticed it was slipping real bad. I can hold the thing wide open and it's like I only have half power and I swear I smelt it burning. So tonight I picked up some 80w90 gear oil. Thought maybe I would try that. But if I do need to put a new clutch in how do I do this? I can turn a wrench but never had to rebuild a clutch before. Thanks for any help!

Cool thanks man for your help! So do I just drop it the new plates? Are the plates the same? I bet it will make more sense once I start taring it apart. Did you just snug up the five bolts or do you have to torque them to spec? I will do it withthe quad on its side i dont want to pull the motor Also what oil do you run in your trans? Thanks for your time!!

ya make sure there atleast close to the same thickness because if there not then ur clutch could slip i did that on an accedent because i lost one of the plates make sure theres no metal shavings or any of that in there and i run (lucas high performance motorcycle oil its synthetic SAE 20w-50)

Ok cool. So I just alternate plates and drop them right in? Do the have to line up any way special? I read I have to soak them in oil first too. I like Lucas stuff maybe I will give that a try. Thanks man for all your help with this!

Awesome that's what I wanted to hear! Sounds simple now! I'm not sure what oil I want to run. I tried the ATF type f but I don't like it. I have a fresh bottle of 80w90 gear oil. Maybe I will try the amsoil 10w40 wet clutch oil. So the Lucas oil you run works awesome though? I just want the best oil in the new clutch. Does it sound like my clutch plates are bad by my first post or do you think it's the ATF oil in there?

ya it does work awsome not saying its the best because theres alot better stuff out there but of course more priceier but it works great havent had a promblem out of it and i replaced my clutch when i tore it down well have u been out rideing it any like atleast couple hours to mix the new oil u put in there? and from ur first post it sounded like it was the oil because u said u changed it and then it started doin that. but then again how thick that old oil was it could have been helping the clutch enough to where u couldnt notice that it was slipping just to be safe i would take it apart and check them, out if they look bad then i would go with the new clutch
