New guy here with an 87/89 230/250 Cluster #$%*
Hi I'm new here, trying to find some info or parts for this bike I just bought.
What I was told is it's an 87 Lt230s with an 89 Lt250s engine. It runs, but doesn't run right:
Mid throttle it bogs down, spits and sputters. Light on the throttle is good, full throttle it scats. I think it's running lean too, after a couple minutes the pipe is glowing bright red.
It's a bitch to start. Some times it will start after 2 or 3 kicks, some times it takes 15 minutes. Once it heats up or you ride within 20 feet of water, if it dies you're out of luck, but you can pull start it in 2nd gear.
I cleaned the carb really good and that didn't help. It has a 110 main jet and a 20 pilot. I think the main is stock but the pilot should be a 17.5 stock right? Oh and it has a Super Trap pipe (I'm assuming that's aftermarket). I also have a brand new 112.5 main/25 pilot jet that I could swap in.
Also, I know there are some parts missing on the needle, I only have one clip and one washer, the small spring is missing.
Where can I get a carb rebuild kit? I haven't been able to find one online anywhere. Shouldn't the carb be jetted larger if it has an aftermarket pipe?
If anybody has a service manual and can email me some pages I'd be forever grateful. Would like to check the valve adjustment and timing as well. Thanks.

Scooter - Thanks. That's what I'm thinking. It will backfire through the carb if you mash the throttle real fast. I'm going to adjust the valves when I get home and tear the carb down again.
One more question. I've seen a compression release mentioned on here, but haven't been able to find where it's located. I only have clutch and brake levers on the bars. Like I said, this thing has been frankenstiened together. Where on the head is the release valve?

Well I've got it running better now. I checked the timing, adjusted the valves, new plug, and swapped the jets to 112.5/20. It's not spitting and sputtering any more but it does back fire when you let of the throttle and the mixture is still off. It's still a bitch to start though. Maybe the CDI or magneto? And the exhaust fell off. The bolts holding the flange to the head backed out, they were too small and didn't really thread right. Anybody know what size and thread the stock studs are?

No matter how it was jetted, it is going to spit and sputter on decel if those exhaust studs were loose. Get this fixed, and see if it still does it. Generally a popping on decel means going up a bit on the pilot. You may also need to fatten up the needle(lower the circlip on the needle a notch or two) to take care of the midrange issues.
