Default Oil Level Question

I have a '98 Quadrunner 500, and have a question about oil level.

I changed the oil Saturday, and put in the amount stamped in the case, 3400 ml. So I put in the 3.4 liters.
The thing is, there is a sight glass on the side with dashes, that I assume are the range of oil level. However, after putting the recomended amount, the sight glass is completely filled

thoughts?

The correct way is to run the engine for about 4*5 minutes, then let it sit for another 4*5 minutes. The oil level should be correct after the engine is warmed up. I would double check the correct oil amount though. Almost a gallon of oil seems like an excessive amount for a 500cc machine.

That's what I thought, and i did some searching around, and I should have gone by the sight glass. The comment was made that, that is the capasity if you break the motor down and truely empty it.
