Default 1985 LT250F starter sticks

The starter won't stop turning with the engine. Does the gear on the starter pop out, like a car starter, or does it stay in the same place. It makes a terrible racket, even when turning over with the pull cord. I removed the starter, and most of the noise is gone, but still somehting sounds like it's turning when it shouldn't. Any ideas?

the quad has a bendix like a car started but it isnt attached to the starter. it is a set of gears that go in between the starter and fly wheel. you might wanna try taking it out and oiling it up. maybe its stuck in the "on" position

Thanks Newporthillclimber. I found that the 3 bolts that hold the starter clutch to the flywheel had backed out or broken off and were jamming things. I put it all back together, but now the gearbox seems to be jammed. I just took off the pan under the drain plug, and am finding broken pieces of c*clips, etc. I`m in the process of removing the clutch side of the engine to see what`s still left in there.....
