Default 03 ltz 400 issues

I just got this thing. Ive been told it just had a new cylinder and pistion put in and its been jetted. It does have a HHR or HHM or something pipe - dont remember and dont feel like going to look. It sounds great but there are a few issues.

1. when at idle with clutch in or out or in or out of gear dosnt matter. it will make the clicking or knocking noise but its not constant. it will do it for a few stop and start in quick increments then sometimes it will be more consistant.

my guess - valves need ajusting 0r maybe something with the cooling pump

2. sounds great going forward - the engine revs great and sound fine but when its in reverse it sounds like it wont rev as high and starts to sputter (maybe not sputter but that as close as i can get to explaining it)

aside from that its great no issues - i need to get a manual for it.

this is my first post - ive been riding atvs for a 7 years and this is my first sport bike- i love it. thanx for any help - i plan on being around for awhile and will do my best to apply my knowledge where needed (i kno a good bit about 2 stroke dirtbikes)

hey welcome to the forum!

i cant really help you too much on the first part, all i can say is my 250r does it and i dont think anything of it haha.

but for the second part, im pretty sure that it has a special rev limitier like most utilities that restricts speed/rpm's while in reverse. when the rev limiter is doing it's job, the engine will sound like crap, no worries. just try to keep the revs under that speed.

hope this helps!

i figured it might be a rev limiter. thats cool. good thing too its already super fast in reverse lol.

im gonna check the valve clearances today, as soon as i figured out how lol.

question ? do you change valve clearances when you switch pipes n stuff - like you do with jetting ?

no need to change the clearance with a pipe. just keep in mind, if you find that it needs adjusting, its not adjustable. you need shims.

yea, i kno. shims are pricy. i checked it, and it seems like they are too tight. but i dont think i found top dead center.

something to gripe about - the hole for the plug is deep and had mud in it, and is now in my cylinder errrrr which means i will have to pull that all apart to clean it.
