Default my quadsport lt230 and some questions..

hey

i'm new here, i got a cheap lt230 that needed some work (paint, chain, sprockets, mag cover, tie-rod end, ...

it haves a new Fox rear shock, duro excavator tires (too big!), unknown handlebars(i hate the stock ones)

i tried it for about 15 minutes since i got it (i bought it in november), but the worn chain broke the side cover.

i ordered a new side cover, shifter seal, motor mount bolt and i'm supposed to receive them tomorrow.

anyway here's some pictures.

what do you think about it?

well, here's my question.

how do I know if a sprocket is worn out?

also, the chain guides (those things in plastic) are worn out. Do I need to change them?

It's easy to tell if your sprockets are worn, just look at the teeth. If they are hooked, skinny, or the chain is sloppy on the sprockets than they are worn out. When you buy a new chain and sprockets, be sure to get an O-ring or X-ring chain since they will last a lot longer but they cost more initially. The plasctic blocks are there for the chain to slide on so it doesn't saw through your swingarm.

That front sprocket os in great shape. If the back looks similar I'd say you were good to go.

Make sure to check the swingarm bearings and the rear wheel bearings. Any play can cause you to be throwing chains into the side case. Also make sure the chain has proper tension. You can get a case saver from Vinces Cycle in KY. He has a website. Let me know if you need the link. I just got one recently. Only $20.00. Beats buying another case cover. Regards, Randall.

Here's the link to a site with parts form the 230's. I also know where another 230 is in salvage that has several items that could be bought pretty cheap. Frame, swingarm, sprockets, a arms, frame, bars, seat pan, brakes, shocks, etc etc.
