Z 400 air box and go fast questions
Ive heard of taking the air box lid off for more power. When I tried it on my stock Z400, it ran very bad. Whats the trick? Carb ajustments? I would like to beef my rig up enough to hang with my buds 450ex. What are some good mods I can do, that wont hurt my wallet too bad? What would about $500 worth of go fast goodies do for me?

The fact that it ran bad with the lid off, just proves that it will do a lot to increase your performance, AFTER YOU GET A REJET! You increased the amount of air, now you need to increase the amount of fuel to match it!
I like this lid (http://www.ehsracing.com/), because it has an Outerwears that keeps a lot of the dirt out of your box, yet flows huge amounts of air.

for less than $300.00 I added a White Bros. (E) series slip on, K&N with outer wear removed the air-box lid and re-jetted and it made an honest to god seat of the pants differnce especially in the low and mid range. If that can make such a diff on my ex's it should do wonders for your z.

Go to albaaction.com and look at their performance packages, they offer FMF and ALBA, they are jets, full exhaust k&n filter and adapter, and outerware. This for around 500(480 for the ALBA i think) I am saving up for one of these for my z400 i just dont know which one yet.

You could get a 440 kit for $260 from wiseco, if not that, get a pipe, filter, and rejet it, but I don't think you could keep up with the R, its just to fast. But if you get the 440 you may have a good chance, but you or some one has to install it profesionally.
