Only run "Full synthetic 0W-40" in that motor or you will be doing it again.

To remove cam start by remove cam gear cover rh side, 8mm socket. down by pull start there is a 5/8 bolt sticking up remove this to see timing mark pull eng over to tdc. remove cam tentioner ( 2 8mm bolts rh side) . remove 3 bolts that hold cam gear to cam(mark gear to chain) tie gear up with wire keeping tention on chain. go to left side remove water line elbow fron head(2 8mm bolts, remove 3 8mm bolts that hold decompession cover on. and slide cam out left side carefull not to let decompression parts fall out of center of cam.
Only run "Full synthetic 0W-40" in that motor or you will be doing it again.

Carb is not necessary though, I person I know put a H.O motor in his Sportsman 400 and kept the 32mm carb. He said it worked out great without even a re jetting . Here is his PM
I would think the cam alone would make a good performance improvement even without the larger 40mm carb.
Not sure but I think Polaris only makes the H.O cam now. The Part number is 3085855

Just wanted to thank you for the info you gave me on the engine swap on the '05 Sportsman 400. The 500 H.O plugged in there with little hassle and ran like a champ......didn't even have to change jetting on the 32mm which I found odd. Anyway, I really appreciate your help!

my old cam looks just like the pic. i have the cam and rocker arm replaced. wasnt too bad. runs much better, no more backfiring thru the carb. but now i have the problem of it not wanting to run full throttle. when i give it full throttle, it takes a bit for it to get to full throttle. when i put the airbox on, it wont rev up at all. seems to be running rich too. any thoughts. i have ordered a manual, but its not here yet.

Being that its a 96 I would check for worn buttons in the secondary clutch, that causes a problem like that.
