Default Starter replacement

I have a 96 Polaris sportsman 400. I am replacing the stock starter. I have located the starter and the 4 visible 10 mm bolts. I have loosened the pull start cowling to expose the 2 bolts from that side BUT.........the front drive chain blocks its removal.(cowling). Do I really have to remove this tight chain or is there a trick?? If so, then how do I release the tension on the chain so I can remove the master link???
Please help. Thanks!!!
