My son and I did a 47 mile ride today from Black Canyon City, AZ to Cleator, AZ and back. The first part was old mining roads and lots of rocky river bottom with a lot of steep ups and downs, we had an average speed of about 10 mph. Total miles to Cleator was 26. On the way back we were on a dirt county roads with an average speed of 35 mph and only 19 miles back. The Grizzly used 2.068 gallons and got 22.72 MPG with a range of 120.41 miles per tank (5.3 gal) The XP 850 used 2.942 gallons and got 15.97 MPG (the best I've got so far) with a range of 71.86 miles per tank (4.5 gal). We raced a few times from zero to about 50 mph and were dead even to about 45 when the XP 850 would start to pull away. The ride of the XP 850 blows away the Grizzly 700, I rode the XP 850 for about 40 miles of the ride than switched to the Grizzly so my son could try the XP 850 out and he wouldn't give it back. Like I've said before if the XP 850 had a wet clutch, ball joints with tapered shafts and nuts and Grizzly style 4X4 system and brakes it would be hard to beat. I still say over all the Grizzly is a better Quad. TOM

That's the worst performance I have read about an 850. The mpg should be around 20 and it should blow that Griz away in a race.
I like the idea of the clutch, but I don't care for the 4x4 on the Griz. A wet brake in the rear like the Kawi and Zuki would be a great improvement for both. I noticed that right away after hitting a puddle and the brakes were not immediate like they were on my brute force.

I average 16 mpg on my 850....And that is trail riding at a average speed usually of about 20 mph....I have checked it several times and it is always within 1 mpg.

It think the mileage for the XP is close. I think that I get about 85 miles to a tank with the larger tank. A lot of time my riding which is mostly logging roads includes a lot of elevation change. It doesn't seem to matter if it's two up or just me. I wonder how much difference there would be if you hooked a trailer on each of them and did our 35 mile run into hunting camp.
My 850 will smoke a grizz 700 off the line and all the way out. It took about 250 miles for mine to loosen up before the engine really came alive, though I don't know how many miles yours has on it. I don't have EPS, so I have the bigger tank, and get around 85 to 90 miles per tank. Once more, that was with a couple hundred miles on it. I didn't bother to check mileage before that, knowing the engine was tight.

The XP has the stock tires and the Grizzly has stock size replacements. Both were in four wheel drive. I've have also raced them on a paved road with the same results both in two wheel drive. My XP has 380 miles and the Grizzly has 2600 miles on it.

maybe the belt is slipping on the xp or something... no other explanations otherwise... unless the xp rider is significantly heavier then the grizzly rider..
they shouldnt even be close but everything doesnt always go the way it should in the real world..

Where did you purchase your larger tank because I'd be interested in purchasing one. I didn't think there was an aftermarket tank for this machine yet.
