I had looked at it when I had it off before, was very brittle but looked ok, so Im pretty sure this is my problem. I made a new intake setup, so hopefully I will get my kit tomorrow and be good to go.
Now all I need to do is figure out why the heck its pushing so much oil out the vent on the pump..
The shifting problem was due to the high idel, at one point in my messing around with the carb I did get it to idle down and it shifted right. So now my only problem is the oil.

The boot was probably leaking air which is why you can't get it to idle right. Changing the boot is a must. It might not have been the only problem, but definitely a problem.
If it was idleing high the clutch (secondary) was probably engaging causing the grinding sound when trying to change gears. If you can turn the machine off and change gear then start and have it run in that gear I bet money that is what is going on. Those older transitions, the secondary can't be turning when changing gears. If it is idleing high enough to turn the secondary then the "grinding" is heard.
