Default I'm about to buy this four wheeler what does every one think about it?

It is a 1995 Polaris scrambler 400 2 stroke 4x4. There is nothing wrong with it except after about 5 minutes of test driving it would turn off after about one minutes it would stat right back up. Then turn off again after about 5 more minutes . The dude did not know why. He wants $1000 do you think this is worth buying ?

Thanks!

Sounds like the quad has a thermal intermittence issue. Check the price of a replacement CDI unit (assuming it has CDI ignition) and the price of a voltage regulator--you likely need one, or both, and factor that into your purchase price.

Get him to go down on that price for sure. I was eyeballing a 1999 scrambler 500 4 stroke for 1300. Included a aftermarket muffler, K&N, and a new belt. Also had extra used belt, new plug, oil, and filter.

With that I had a 1996 Sport 400 not to long ago. It ran FOREVER with minimal maintaince. It was finally get doggy before I traded it off, likely from just a rich jet because we jetted up for a pipe and never back down when took the pipe off.

But again, get him to come down on that price.

Thanks for your input dude I don't think I'm going to go any higher then $750. What do you think could be causing the four wheeler to turn off ?

i wouldnt pay that much for a bike that wont stay running. it may be something simple, but thier again like mentioned it could be an expensive part. imo

Defective:
1. Coil
2. CDI/Ignition control unit
3. Voltage Regulator
4. All of the above.

My guess is that the coil or the CDI control unit are thermally intermittent--work fine when cold/cool, but shut down when warm.

Suggest you purchase a can of "freeze spray" at Radio Shack.
Start the quad, and spray the coil and CDI box. Spray them every 30 seconds.
If the quad continues to run as long as you cool the components, you've narrowed the problem down.
At this point, spray just one component--if the quad dies, the other component is the issue.
Now spray that component only to confirm your test.
