Default Belt Slipping

Have 2009 Sportsman 500 EFI fairly new with 250 miles on it. Last night I was in high and tried to go over some big logs. Hit throttle and none of the tires turned and smelled belt. (Don’t think damaged only a few seconds). Popped it into low and it went right over the logs. I know I should have shifted to low first. Question is should the belt be slipping that easily? Does it need to be tightened and can it be?

Yes, anything below 7-10 mph you should be in low.. When traversing logs?? YES you should always be in low. Might consider a HeelClicker clutch kit, helps on belt grab & take off..... If you burnt belt bad you should be able to see flat spots and maybe feel/hear it. get a service manual pay for itself in a very short time. Working on the clutch is fairly easy......
