Adjusting oil pump '95 300 4x4 - ATVConnection.com ATV Enthusiast Community

I recently picked up a '95 300 4x4 and everything seems really good on this machine....but it seems like it smokes a bit much and the plug has quite a bit of oil on it.

I have the owners manual and I also picked up the Clymer service manual.....and I checked out the section on adjusting the pump....but I cant seem to see the alignment marks on it. The pump is located below the carb and in front of the transmission...so it's hard to get at. Or am I looking at the wrong thing?

my 400 smokes also, mine is in the marks, i switched to polaris VES gold oil put a k&n filter on it and it doesnt smoke as bad, I only fouled 1 plug before i changed oil and that was in the winter plowing my plug still shows im running a bit rich. the oil pump is on the front of my motor and a cable goes to a little arm under the cover.

400 pump on the front left side...250 and 300 is on the rear right hand side of motor. the aligment marks are there just have to look real close..if i remember correctly the marks should be at about the 9 o'clock position. make sure you adjust the slack in your throttle cable after the oil pump is calibrated

I just went and pulled my cover off and had to really clean it up and the marks are very hard to see .

Thanks guys....I'll look a bit harder...may need to use an inspection mirror to see the marks.

Its extremely difficult to see the marks on the 300s even with a mirror. They were prone to being to lean on the oil and some died a slow death. Polaris warranteed alot of engines back then. There is a procedure using measurements for setting it up but its not as good as seeing the marks. Taking the airbox off and moving the carb to one side might make it more visible but the tranny is in the way. Newer models have a stop so the oil pump arm just needs the slack tacken out of the cable when the throttle slide is at idle.
