Why?
I been riding Motorcycles for over 30 years.
Why do ATVs and watercraft. Never been on a snowmobile, But I guess they have thumb throttles.
Why is this. I much prefer the twisting the grip method.

TOO dangerous! Have one old man that installed a twist grip that has a string attached to thumb throttle to operate! I hate trying to drive this thing when I service it! He hasnt flipped it yet,BUT i'm just waiting!
thats what i thought also ... i thought about doing it.. i grew up on dirt bikes and i was like rough.. i go know rough... but then on a atv your on 4 wheels not two.. i think having a little less controll than a dirtbike.. with a twist grip that is...

my pwc (jetskiis) dont have a thumb throttle. They have a trigger lever in front of the right handle grip. seems to work good for me, It doesnt bother me that my different toys have different controls, it comes natural to operate each one the way it was made when I jump from one to the other.
I guess I can see it.
I just feel I can hang on better with a twist grip.
I'm not going to change it, I just wondered. Figured that was the reason. But just thought I would ask.
Thanks
Tom
The biggest problem with a twisty on an ATV, is that the machine does not lean.....
On a bike, when you turn, the machine leans with you, thus keeping your arm angle the same on the bars....
On an ATV, the rider leans and the machine stays flat....so your wrists are at an awkward angle to both hold on, AND control the throttle.... This is especially difficult when you need to be gentle or fine with the power....
I have seen SOOOOO many people who came from bikes and wanted a twisty, only to end up getting hurt and changing back to the thumb throttle. Some people can pull it off just fine. But for every one of those there seems to be 10 people who learn their lesson the hard way.
Motorcycle twist throttle freeze stuck to easy in winter ,thats why sleds do not use them, some people ride there ATVs all winter so maybe that the reason they have them also.
