Default 2006 Sportsman 450 stator problem

So I had my starter go bad and some other electrical problems (RPMs reported wrong and battery light flashing.) Took it in to the shop and had the starter rebuilt which used up all my budget. The electrical problems I'm told are a bad stator (shorting out and over charging.) I can't afford to have them do the work (OEM stator is $380) so I'm shopping ebay for a replacement stator and am going to attempt the repair myself. It doesn't look to hard. My question is if something is shorting out wouldn't it be in the wiring to the stator rather than the coils?

Has anyone experienced a stator problem before? They told me that there was a lot of moisture in there and that caused the problem. I'm guessing that happened when one time I washed it without setting the recoil handle all the way down. My recoil rope got all wet. I thought I got it all dried out but apparently not before damage was done. The weird part is that I didn't have any problems until after a whole summer of riding.

well moisture in that housing can cause alot of isses for sure. but since its an 06' 450, have you had the ecm recall done on it? alot of what you described is an issue that a bad ecm act like. just wondering if they gave you the updated ecm. imo

I have two of them and no issues with the stator.......

I am on my third ECM though.......Does all kinds of wired stuff if this is bad.

Side note here.....I pressure wash my Quads after every full day trip and do go in water up to the headlights with no issues so far.
The dealer may have just took a guess with your trouble IMO.

I would check into it a little more before you tear into it....
I have a Factory Service Manual if you need to ask any Questions or on any Ohms readings specs.......Good luck...Caper........

I did have the ECM replaced. They told me there was water in the stator or at least evidence of it. I found a few on Ebay that will fit for around $130, so I think I'm going to go that route. One question I have is if I need a special Polaris flywheel puller or will any gear puller work?

i beleave you will need a fly wheel puller to get it out for sure. maybe caper can read in his book to check it out for sure. i think i would pull it apart to(if your going to do the work your self)to see whats going on in there for sure before you buy it unless your 100% sure thats whats wrong. imo

So I just had the shop leave the flywheel of so I don't have to pull it. I looked over the stator and I can see a spot where it is corroded. So I'm fairly certain that this is the problem. I found a salvaged stator for $99 the hardest part of the repair is going to be pulling the wire and re running the wiring.

Just 2 days ago I had an 06 700 efi in the shop with the same problems. I ohmed the stator and it tested fine between the legs, but had continuity to ground. I pulled the cover, flywheel and the stator off. When I checked it again on the bench it didn't have continuity to ground anymore.
The cust had lubed his starter bendix in the past and what happened is when he tore it apart, one of the washers off the starter bendix had fallen out of place and was touching the wires, under the sheath, on the wiring right where the wires are connected to the coil wires) It was grounding out and not charging.
It's worth checking out. maybe you'll get lucky too.

This be a dumb question but can you explain to me what this means:

"I ohmed the stator and it tested fine between the legs, but had continuity to ground."

I recently bought a multimeter when I started to have problems but have to say I really don't know how to use it. I guess it would be more clear if I pulled the stator wire out because right now I don't even know where the end is at.

Check to see if maby Your recalled ECM is full of water.
I took Mine to the dealer and this big chrome looking ECM box had filled up with water and caused a bunch of electrical issues.
Now i`m hoping that polaris will cover it under some kind of a warranty.LOL LOL LOL MyAO

As per the book,

Measure the resistance value of each of the three stator
legs: Y1 to Y2, Y1 to Y3, and Y2 to Y3. Each should
measure 0.19 Ω ± 15 %.

And

Charge Coil Y1, Y2, or Y3 to Ground Open (Infinity)

Check for continuity between all three wires, then check each wire for continuity to ground(which it should not have any)
