TOO THICK! use AGL OR oil suitable for chaincase transmissions.

If the oil is too thick, all the bearings, bushings, the clutch, etc won't get the proper lubrication, not to mention the oil pump has to be able to easily pump the fluid all the way up to the cylinder head(s) to lubricate the camshaft(s).

If you prefer to use AMSOIL products (and I do), the product you probably want is AMSOIL 2000 Synthetic chaincase lube. To be sure, check this page and make sure the Polaris part# is in the specs for your ATV...

AMSOIL Synthetic chaincase lube.

Default Polaris Transmission Fluid

I've spent the last 2 weeks trying to decide what fluids to put in my '04 500 Sportsman... checked all possible forums, called multiple Polaris service shops, and bothered the poor guy at Royal Purple way to much. I am taking mine in tomorrow morning to get fully serviced, with all my own fluids. Here's what I've found that I think will work best for me... might not be best for you though. 0W40 (Royal Purple) for engine oil. 10W30 (Royal Purple) for transmission oil... ok I like quaddruple checked this with a Polaris service tech and royal purple tech... Polaris tech told me that their AGL Fluid is pretty much the same thing as a fully synthetic 5W30... the guy at Royal Purple told me , more than once, that their 10W30 (regular motor oil or their Max-Cycle oil) would work and is comparable to Polaris AGL Fluid, he even said that since I live in Houston, that 10W40 would be ok... Where was I, Front Gear Box = Polaris AGL Fluid (all the forums I've read, said don't screw around with the front end, so I wont). Polaris HUB fluid for the HUBs... Ummm think that about does it... I don't have a separate rear gear box, my tranny and rear end are the same fluid. Like I said, I know most people just say to use the Polaris stuff, and in some cases I did, but I wanted to give my atv the best... ok I know a bunch of people are going to be like, well why did you put Royal Purple in there then? it sucks... yeah yeah... I did it because I've always run Royal Purple in my trucks, boat, etc... never had any problems. That and I grew up like 5 minutes from where they make the stuff.. you stick with what you know, know what I mean. Anywho, hope this has helped you, like I said, I was posting forums left and right trying to figure out what to run in my ATV, just thought I'd return the favor.

Old Polaris Tech: You are right on the money. Just purchased a quart of Polaris AGL and it is much thinner than AMSOIL 75w-90 gear lube. Thanks Ken............
