Default Recoil pull starts

I have had my sportsman for a while now(2001 sportsman 400) and when I got it, the previous owner informed me of the only issue knew of with it,,,,The pull cord was broken. I purchased the ATV and have NEVER needed to pullstart the machine because the starter works like clockwork sooo, Today I was pulling off the cover to access and remove the stator. I had allready decidede to fix the pullcord for the recoil starter while I was in there. Imagine my suprise when I found Nothing in there,,,,,,,,,,,Nothing, not a spring, not a pully, not even hint of a recoil assembly. I just started laughing cause ,,,well,, what else could I do??? So now heres my question, What year/ models are compatible with the 01 sportsman 400 because I am going to try and find this assembly online used to save some bucks. Your help is apppreciated.

I think the recoil never changed, you can used the internal parts from a 1996-2009 and from the motor of a 500,455.330,300
425 as well. Go to a Polaris parts site and compare part numbers from different machine just to make sure though. The Polaris recoil rope Reel on my ATV is the same one as on my friends 92 Polaris 500 Indy snowmobile.

If the previous own removed the recoil internal, it,s because he had a problem, maybe something let lose and rattle around in the recoil housing causing the stator problem.

Just checked, any recoil parts from the above mentioned motor of any year will work.

If that is the case, then that would be awesome. I have looked online and different models of the same year have diffrernt part numbers but they look the same. I will do some more checking and if anyone else knows for sure and could confirm tthat would be great!

Not sure if the 2 stroke starts are different, I would doubt it though. Polaris is not going to want to make a variety of different parts for something as simple a pull start.

Here a cross referrence site for Polaris parts.http://parts.polarisind.com/Browse/Browse.asp

On 4 stroke motors the bendix is above the flywheel and on 2 strokes the bendix is below the flywheel so the 2 stroke model recoils will not work.

If you look close the internal parts of the recoil are the same on the 2 and 4 stroke, just the recoil cover is different. The pull start has nothing to do with the bendix,it just grabs the flywheel only.

heres the update,,,, I wnet to local stealership and the mechanic,,, and I use that title loosely, said that they all work so I ordered one of EBay and it should be here wednesday so I guess we'll annswer this debate then. BTW I ordered a 1996 snowmobile pullstart, cost less annd the part#s cross refrenced at the dealer so well see, If not I'm only out $28 so not a big loss. Ill update post again when it arrives.
