Default 00 Sportsman 500 no spark after rebuild

I bought a 00 Sportsman 500 off a guy that overheated it. He sold it to me as is with engine removed from the bike and engine apart (crank cases not split, but head, cylinder removed).

I got it back together, but I have no spark. Where to start? Take off flywheel and check and clean stator? Is there a CDI test? Ground problem? The engine will turn over fine with the electric start, and I have have compression, but no spark. I am assuming that since the starter will work, my ground is good?

Thanks for the help, great website!!!

Seth

Check resistance specs on stator if have manual, dont have too many problems with coils unless plug wire bad, also pull black wire from cdi and check if has spark. MOST of my problems are stator related, either pulser(pickup) or main charge coil.If either pulser wires shorts to ground(red and red/white could be problem and can buy it separate instead of complete stator. CHECK stator ground wire, usually tied in with other brown wires at coil mount bolt. Keep us posted Good luck
