Default 2001 sportsman 500 HO ( how to change oil?)

Just picked up a used 01 sportsman 500 ho w/ 500 miles on it, and was just wondering what is the proper way to go about changing the oil? Any pics or diagrams would be great thanks.

down load a manual if this link doesnt work just go to polaris .com and you'll find where you down load a onwers manual for free.

yea i got my own sign in on there, but go ahead and just push sign in and go from there.

it works, but doesnt sem to be a complete mnual, and says nothing about oil changes

im thinking that theres a oil plug on the bottom of the motor and u unscrew it adn let the oil drain out and open up the oil dipstick and then u should also beable to take off the oil filter.....correct me if im rong???

If you buy an oil change kit from Polaris, it comes with detailed instuctions. Just make sure whatever way you go about it PRIME THE ENGINE!!!

Scrammy's right. Buy the oil change kit it will give a lot of details and tell you about priming the engine. You may want to look at the directions in the oil change kit before you buy it, that way you can decide if you would just rather have the dealer do it.

To put it simply, changing the oil on the 500s is a pain in the a$$. You drain it from two locations (the oil tank and right side of the bottom of the motor). The drain bolt on the bottom is tight because of the drive shaft. The priming part can be a little un-nerving as the future of your motor depends on it. Also, to thoroughly change it your suppose to remove a screen from the oil tank, which requires removing a banjo bolt.
