Default fuel guage blinking 05SP700

I was riding on Sunday and I started the machine up and noticed all the fuel indicators were blank and "FUEL" was blinking across the display (like I had an empty tank). BUT>>>The tank was just shy of full. I continued riding and the fuel bars finally showed full but the entire fuel dispaly (little gas icon and the bars) would disapear and then come back on, sometimes they would disapear for a second other times for 10-15 seconds. The rest of the display was fine. And just to clarify...the entire gas display would disapear not just the center of the blocks. Any idea why this would happen??? Thanks.

wow , thats weird. sounds like an electric probem such as a bad ground. when it was flashing when it was full i would say ht esending unit is messed up but i dont know whether that would make the dispaly dissappear though.

I just wanted update the question in case someone else had this problem. I brought the bike back to the dealer under warranty. They ended up having to put a new gas tank (filter, pump, and sending unit) on the bike because the sending unit had gone bad. Good thing I bought the warranty. It has now paid for itself.

Mine was the fuel sending unit. Of course with this, they have to replace the whole gas tank (filter, pump and sending unit). It cost about $600.00. Good thing it was under warranty. I guess the extended warranty paid for itself on this one. Good luck with yours. -Eric

If I had to cough up that much just for a fuel guage, I'd try to find a new mechanical one for my gas cap. Either that or see if I could swap out my tank for the bigger x-2 tank. Does anyone know if the X-2 tanks fit our Sportsmans no problem? Brian

just the other day my fuel indicator bars showed a full tank, i didn't start the bike, just turn the key on, i knew this didn't seem right, took the cap off and put in at least 2.5 gal. i'm not going to pony up $600 if indeed the sender is toast. i'll be watching the fuel closely this hunting season, rarely do i ride anywhere near the range of the fuel tank. thanks for the thread guys

I had a fuel gauge problem with my 450 (2006) when I first took it home.....I waited until I took it back to the dealer for the first service and they repaired it then .....He thought it was the fuel sending unit but it was something else.....
It was done under warranty and I don't have a bill on the actual work done ...so I am sorry I forget what he did but someone else might know what else is there to replace other than the sending unit that is electrical............caper........My display didn't light up at all......no LCD bars...no fuel icon nothin........But the rest of the display worked fine......speedo and info....
