OK heres what the vent tube does it allows air to get out of the fuel bowl on the carb. so fuel can get in... if it is restricted in any way no air can get out and no fuel can get in. I had this happen to me on my 250 TB. as for the dielectric grease put it in the end of the plug boot and then snap it back on you may have to hold it in for a minute I have seen the grease form a good enough seal to pop the boot back off if you don't hold it for a bit. I have heard that some have had to silcone the boot on to get a good enough seal but that migh suck the next time you go to take it off! I'm sure one of the two is your prob...

I'm not sure how the vent tube is routed on the Sportsman, but I had that problem on my Predator. It would stall in about a foot and a half or so of water...I rerouted it, and the problem ended. We've had our sportsmans in water enough to make it float, but it never stalled like that.
