Which is faster Scrambler 400 4x4 or Scrambler 500 4x4

Both are about equal stock, give a little to the 500 though. After adding a couple simple mods to the 400 it has much better performance than the 500. You can really make it scream! Stock, the 2-stroke will always feel "peppier" by nature. The 4-stroke will seem to have more low end power.
I have the 400 and love it!

Have both a 96 Sport 400 2wd and a 2000 Scrambler 500 4wd. If they are both stock the 500 will take the Sport every time , low end and top speed. But I also Hve a pipe, midrange, and sping and weights for the Sport. Put those in and its a different ballgame. I think top end stays about the same no matter what you do, other than change sprockets. The 500 is all tourque right thru from bottom to top. The 400 is real snappy and easy to modify. So I guess it all depends on what your looking for. Just keep in mind two strokes require alot more maintainance.

According to my dealer and the Polaris web page's 2001 line up, the Scrambler offerings are as follows:
500 4x4
500 2x4
400 2x4
That's right, no more 2-stroke 4x4 Scrambler. There are a few 2000's left on the dealers floor's, but I had a tough time finding mine. I was planning to buy a 01 in the spring, but after I heard the news, I snatched up the first 00 400 4x4 I could find. $4,900. Haven't ridden it yet, but should be a lot of fun. (If the throttle doesn't stick wide open)

I've owned both the 4x4's. When I owned the 00' 500 4wd I raced my friend on his stock sport 2x4. I had an HPD pipe and clutch kit on mine and although I got him on the line he caught up with me and still got a quad leghth away from me, we then stayed at that distance the rest of the stretch, I weigh 50lbs more than him plus the quad weight difference. I was alittle disappointed though, I thought I'd eat him up.
I traded in the 500 for a 00' 400 4x4 and also had a HPD pipe and clutch kit, K&N filter, delta reeds, rejetted. I raced an almost stock banshee and smoked him on the line only to be pasted when he hit 4-5th gear, my friend on his 00'stock sport 400 2x4 was behind us but not by much. I was again surprised by his stock machine. I now own a 01' sportsman HO, I got sick of the speed game and had my dealers son just get severly injured on his new raptor, he's in a wheelchair and may never walk again. It's important to respect these machines, they all throw some good ponies and anything can happen out there. Don't worry who's faster just ride to your ability and have fun, that's what I try and preach. Watching a 23yr old riding a manual propelled chair is a very scarry scene and I can only pray for him and his family that he will walk again. Craig
