Default Is the normal AWD function?

I have a 96 Sportsman 500...

I'm happy to do some research before diving into this much deeper, but I'm not sure how the system is supposed to function entirely.

If the back end is off the ground, are both tires supposed to spin the the same direction with it in 2WD mode? I wouldn't think not since they're supposed to be an open diff right?

Also, with the rear off teh ground in 2WD mode and the front still on the ground, the fronts don't move, which makes me think that the AWD sellector is at least working properly.

I also notice that when on pavement in 2WD mode that it's really hard to turn a corner. My assumption is that the rear end is stuck locked.

Advice?

your rear end is fine. no i mean your BIKE. LOL! the 2 axles are splined into a gear inside the case. its not an open dii. as far as the push check tire pressure 5# front and rear recommended or the tire could be causing to push depending on type, size. most quads will push some on pavement, you just dont notice it much on dirt.

Right, there is no rear differential, the rear wheels are always locked.

okay, that makes sense. I have a sellectable locker in my jeep, and it handles just like my jeep does when I enguage the rear locker on pavement. I thought it wasn't always locked.

I guess that answers my question!

Thanks!

Do you have a wrangler? If so, did you add the locker, or did you get a Rubicon?

I have a 2000 Wrangler TJ. It's got Ox lockers front and rear that I converted over to work on compressed air like the ARBs.

I love those lockers. never fail me.

Sweet. I'm 15 and want my dad's jeep when I get my license. Unfortunatly, I ordered a build sheet and its got the d35 in the back, so no 38's just yet lol

ya, I'd stick to 33s with a D35 if you're even going to think about a locker. You can do a superior Axle Super 35 kit to beef it up a bit. Then you can do 35s. I know someone running 37s on a super 35 kit with a locker and he's doing okay. It makes me wonder if he actually wheels though .

Yeah, i've heard good things about S35's. But I think if i ever got the jeep, I would get decent tires, maybe 31's, so no suspension work, and a winch. I would love to modify a jeep, but I wouldn't appreciate the constant fear of it not working right (i know there's little risk if its built right, but that's what the Sportsman's for). You can never go wrong with stock. So maybe some armor and a winch and I think I could manage to have a good bit of fun
