thats what I was going to say is there is an air lock in the coolant go through all the steps of burping it by jacking the front up letting it run with the cap off add coolant as needed (OPT posted it in another post how to do this)

OPT says it changed in 2005, so it may be a different, and easier procedure.

I'm sure OPT will clear it all up shortly.

Bleeding air out of the system is better on the 2005 model, but you may still have to jack it up to make it easier. Plus this is the year of the ECM problems! The Ecm controls the fan, charging and a few other things! Is the fan working when the hot light comes on?? Did your friend ever have the ecm recall done? Plus a few US made ecms have gone out on me along with several members of the forum! Also if he doesn't ride it much is the battery in good shape, does he keep it on a maintainer? Battery has to be good for the fan to operate. Several things that could be causing the problem, even something simple as the radiator cap loosing pressure. OPT
