You'll get taxed on the value of the car by the state when you register it. Just like every other rebate. Individual states have not made the decision yet if they're going to tax the money as income, although some likely will.

Unlike regular trade ins where the value of the trade in is DEDUCTED from the purchase price and therefore NOT TAXED as part of the value of the car at registration the Cash for Clunkers dollars is taxed as INCOME!!!!

The point of that lesson is that we should not trust the federal government with approximately 1/6th of our Gross Domestic Product. If they can't run these things well, why should we trust them with our healthcare. I can get healthcare on my own, thank you. I don't need help from Uncle Mitt Romney or Aunt Nancy Pelosi to get it. No offense taken. I don't drive clunkers, so wouldn't know. However, the outrageous state taxes we pay on the value of our vehicle each year in Maine makes one want to drive a clunker.
Finance piece is in reference to clunkers being tied to financing....as in credit from the banks, not government finances in general.
