NOGALES, Ariz. — President Barack Obama promised this spring to help Mexico fight its drug cartels by slowing the flow of cash and weapons from the United States.
And this is what the effort looks like.
For the past five weeks, hundreds of agents participating in a $95 million outbound inspection program have been stepping into southbound traffic lanes, stopping suspicious-looking cars and trucks.
The Associated Press fanned out to the busiest crossings along the Mexican border — San Diego, Nogales, El Paso and Laredo — to see how effective the inspections are.
According to the CBP, between March 12 and April 30 officers seized or arrested:
Fifty-one pieces of ammunition, weapons parts and guns, a minuscule fraction of the 2,000 weapons the Mexican government estimates are smuggled south every day.
$12 million in cash, less than 0.1 percent of the $17 billion to $39 billion the U.S. Justice Department says is illegally sent to Mexico from the U.S. annually.
Without providing any numbers, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told attendees at the Border Trade Alliance International Conference on April 21 that just a few weeks into the intensified outbound inspections, she was amazed at how much had already been seized.
"It’s unbelievable," she said. "So the notion that there wasn’t a river of cash and a flood of guns going into Mexico is a myth. I mean, there was. We want to stop that river."
I don't know who is stupider, the Mexican gov't who claims over 700,000 guns per year are smuggled in from the US, or our very own obama administration that thinks "Fifty-one pieces of ammunition, weapons parts and guns" (not even 51 weapons, mind you. My guess is 2 handguns, 4 magazines, and 45 rounds of ammo) in 45 days constitute a "flood of guns". Or maybe they know it's not a "flood" and they're just telling another typical obama administration lie.
It's all part of the Obama, "we're Americans who are sorry for anything we've done", tour. That is the, "if anything is wrong with the world, it's our fault and I'm sorry", method used by our apologist in chief. I'm tired of it personally. Are we perfect? No. Mexico's problems are not our fault, with the exception of the druggies who keep the producers going.
