Although Im totally against advertisements on a community based website, they are detrimental to offsetting the costs of running a website that attracts this many users. As a web host, I can tell you that bandwidth is the biggest factor in web hosting.
The costs can be astounding, and thus, advertisements help relieve some of that burden.
Although, the server that this site is hosted on seems to be too weak to handle to load the site takes on daily. I would see about adding some memory to the machine, to help with the load times.
