From what I have read, about the only way to check one is to substitute a known good one in it's place. If there is a way, someone will let you know.

The only way to test a cdi box is to substitute it with a known good one. What problems are you having? There are a lot of little things you can try to help out. Just need more info. I have seen cdi's go out but in the last 15 years it hasn't happened very often. It's usually something else. Give some more info and I'll give you some ideas.

"94 harley"
i have a 92 trail boss that i be leave the problem is the CDI Box i have a post but here is a copy... what do you think?---->

Ok we are having a electrical issue maybe, i went through the whole wheeler found a bad voltage rectifier, a bunch of loose wires and fixed everything, but now into the problem. when we have the cdi box's black wire connected to it terminal the wheeler will shut off and won't start- sometimes, other times it will be running unhooked and will die then you hook it up it will run again, for a while then die again, as i said i went threw all wires and switches cot a new ignition switch, volt rectifier, unhooked emergency shutoff switch to ensure a open connection, and also i almost forgot with the cdi black wire unhooked the ignition switch will not kill the motor? i think the CDI Box is fried anyone have any ideas?? before i spend 220.00....thanks<--- This is my post, thanks guys.

It could be the cdi box. I still wouldn't gaurantee it without checking it myself but here is something you could do. The black wire is what is used to ground the cdi and stop the motor. If you can deal with it, leave it unplugged and kill the engine by shutting off the fuel or turning on the choke. It's cheaper than 220.00. Or you could wire a toggle switch in that black wire and use it to kill the machine. I would have to look at a wiring diagram and see exactly where it goes but if you have a bad switch that is going to ground it could do what you say. Try removeing the black wire on the reverse limiter box too. They are famous for going out and causing these probs. I will try to remember to look at a diagram tomorrow and see where the black wire goes. All it would take would be a rubbed spot to grond and it will kill the motor.

we tried the toggle but as i said previously whil running it will change settings it seems i mean you actually need to change it around (black off -->black or from Black on--> black off ) it is strange, i have checked all wires any damaged or loose wires were repaired or replaced, i have a new rev limiter on it, as of today.
