It would be ok to disconnect the hoses and reconnect them to the engine to get you home. I wouldnt ride it like this for very long because the engine runs about 50-70 degrees cooler with the cooler.

Yes, carry a short piece of copper tubing about 2" long, and a couple small hose clamps in your tool kit. If you make a puncture to the radiator disconnect the hoses and put the copper tubing in, clamp it and drive home slowly and stop often to let the engine cool, until you get the radiator fixed properly. You might also want to carry a little extra oil just in case you need it.

get some screening from autozone/advance auto or just about anywhere. Just cut it to fit and bolt it on. It would also be very very easy to use a much better heater core/radiator for the oil cooler. You might have to make a custom mount, but it could be much bigger and really help cool the engine.

If you by-pass the oil cooler you are not going to have to drive slow and stop often to get home, that's the worst thing to do! For years I have ridden 100% air cooled motorcycles and never had to ride slow and stop often. Actually the best thing to do is go faster to get more air going passed the heat fins on the head. And stopping will only cause the motor to heat up more, it needs cool air to cool down! Remember this is an Air Cooled motor that they slapped on an Oil Cooler to drop the running temp down just a bit to help with performance and longevity of the motor and it's a selling feature over other air cooled quads that have a little worthless Computer Fan (that seems to go bad with in a few months) mounted in front of the head like you find on a lot of air cooled Chinese quads!
