I am totally new to sport and am doing my research before I get a truck and atvs for me and my 8 year old son.
I am looking at this product called the ultimate atv rack.
http://store.rampconnection.com/section.php?xSec=103
It seems like a good way to go but was surprised not to see any comments on them in this forum.
I am selling my grand caravan and looking for a dodge or chev pickup. I dont want a trailer. What do you folks think about this product. Help me decide if a 6 foot six box with the above set up work ok.
I havnt decided on the ATVs yet either but it wont be a big utililty type for me.

Why is it that you do not want a trailer?
The ultimate rack is going to set you back about $1,400. If you use your truck for other things, there will be times where you'll need to take it off the truck and store it somewhere. Also, driving up ramps to the height of the bedrails can be 'interesting' at times.
A trailer for two quads will cost you half the price of the rack. You could even store the ATV's on the trailer if you wanted to. Much easier to load and unlead.
My 2 cents.

I must say go with a trailer. Where I live a small trailer will cost maybe a little less or equal to that rack. I have seen guys load quads onto those racks. Lets just say Im glad its not me doing it.
But if you really dont like trailers, that setup does seem like it would work in a short bed and looks like its made real well. It should have plenty of room on it being as your 8 year old wont have a full sized quad.

I have to agree that a trailer is the way to go. Loading an ATV into the back of a truck to the bed rails makes my teeth chatter thinking about it. $1400 will get you a trailer that will carry two full size quads. One day your son will need a bigger bike and the trailer will last for a lot more years than the truck.

I cast another vote for a trailer. Even if you get one just big enough to haul one, and put the other in the back of the truck. I haven't seen one of those set ups in person, but have to believe that eventually, you gonna scratch the truck up pretty good. If only from putting it on and taking it off.

It's an older picture (2005), but I had the 5x10 trailer made for a total of 416 bucks. I liked it because it had 15" wheels on it.
Since then, I've sold both the trailer and the rv.

Thanks Guys. The input is great. I didn't want the trailer due to storage room taken up, what I thought was extra cost, and the hassel backing it up in a long narrow driveway, unloading atvs.
But,,, I've been enlightened.
I can see going up the extra height to the top of the "ultimate carrier" could be a bit risky. If a breakdown occurs I may not even get it up the ramp.
Backing the trailer - I will get used to. I did have boat years ago.
The room for two full size ATVs is a good point. The links and photos help and I think trailer could be the way to go.
I also don't really think I need a long box now. I looked at a Quad Cab I liked.
Thanks for the input!!

somethin about gettin a trailer is that a short trailer will be harder to back with a big truck cause it will turn quicker than ur truck will i would get one long enough for 2 fourwheelers it would be easier to back with i full size truck. i jus dont want u to make the mistake i did and jackknife because u couldnt get under it fast enough. i have done it and it really wont be fun if u have a new truck.
jus my $0.02

Good advice from cowboy - go for a trailer that holds two quads end to end over a short side by side one - especially if you are fairly new to backing trailers.

This is true. Trust me, it ain't easy backing up a 10 foot trailer with a 34 foot rv.
But when I had it hooked to my truck, it was sooo much easier.

I've done both truck rack and trailer. If you intend on getting a bumper pull trailer or even think you might get one of those pop up's the truck rack is fine. I've used mine for years with no issues. It allows me to tow other things and bring my atv's with me. The first time I drove up the rack it was unnerving. But, after driving up and down for a few years and gaining expericence on my wheelers, I have no issues. It's easier in traffic, easier off road and easier to park.
For the Trailer votes, I have a Fifth wheel toy hauler and a 7 X 16 trailer. Depends on what you want to do.
