My new TeryX will be here this week and I want to figure out some way to carry it without a trailer!
I know there must be something out there to carry a RUV ( Kawasaki TeryX, Rhino, RZR) in the bed of your pick up. If not it is time we invent one! I would really like some input from all you members out there that are tired of trailers.........
Thanks Alan

Maybe I'm missing something here but then why not just put it in the bed of the truck? Worst case is that you'll need to bump the front wheels over the wheel wells. Some trucks (like my GMC) have a raised bed that makes the wheel wells fairly small. They only stick up 8 inches, space between is 51". It shouls be an easy thing to pull a SXS up and over.
If that's not a good solution, you could always build a set of side ramps that go over the wheel wells on either side. This would give a gradual ramp to ride the SXS up on. Of course, this would make it sit higher in the truck while going down the road.
There are also those heavy duty bed covers that are strong enough to hold two full sized ATV's. I'm sure that this could hold a SXS as long as you could get ramps long enough and heavy-duty enough to get it up there. In this case though, you're going to spend as much money on the deck and the ramps as you would on a trailer.
Overall I'm a big fan of trailers. Much easier to load and no concerns about unloading your regular stuff from the truck to convert it into a quad hauler. A trailer will set you back $500 to $1,000 for the size you need but it can be money well spent - especially if you startriding with a friend and want to take two quads with just one tow vehicle. About the only downside of a trailer (other than purchase price) would be if you do not have a place to store it.

I agree with Jaybee. Although I have seen the heavy duty bed covers advertised on the Outdoor Channel (I can't think of the manufacturer's name)-looks like the cover is diamond plate, and you just hook up the ramps and drive it on top of the bed cover, secure it and go. Looks neat, but makes the truck look top heavy. But it still leaves the truck bed empty to store the rest of your stuff. I'd still go with the trailer, though.

Well guys, my last trip I pulled my trailer 5,ooo miles over Colorado Rockies and Utah over a 3 week period. It was difficult to find places to park, security is always an issue. So I am looking for a new way of doing things. I drive a 06 GMC Sierra 2500HD DMax and I want everything I need in one package. We are getting ready for a 6 week dune tour in the fall. I will post some pic's of what I come up with..........

I've been one to say I'd try just about anything, but I can't get enthused about putting several thousand dollars worth of offroad fun up that high on a platform that is already by it;s nature a little top heavy to begin with. I just do not trust tht design. I know a lot of guys will swear by them, but for me, it would be a scary proposition.

When you do, let me know. My X2 comes within about 1/64 of an inch from hanging off the dodge tailgate. I do have a trailer though.

I did read an article in the Jan 08 Side X Side magazine, Transporting SXS. It addressed many of my concerns like over loading your truck bed and tailgate with a SXS. Let me say also that I agree with the other comments about parking you investment on top of the truck bed. I think I would be more worried about raising the CG and making 4 X 4 top heavy especially in an of camber turn.
Anyway, I think I have a great concept that I will be building next month. It will take care of my concerns and provide storage, security and will not adversely effect the handling of my truck!
Keep you all posted and thanks again for your comments!

Thanks, great stuff! My design leaves the tailgate on without any weight on it......

I agree with you on that. The only trucks that should be legal to load like that should be duallies only!!! Just like slide in campers its just dangerous to do it with any thing less. Even with a dually you should have some helper springs or air bags to keep the truck stable in a corner.

Well after 2 weeks getting over the flue and a couple more weeks to think about it, I decided I was making it to complicated! I was a simple idea, I just need to make sure the tailgate would support the weight of my TeryX.
So I machined a couple of end pieces and ran a 3/8 stainless rod the entire length of my tailgate. ( holes already there on my GMC) Threaded the ends and ran some 5/8 steel up to some fabricated mounts from the rear stake bed holes!
I changed the design 4 or 5 times because I didn't want to have to buy stuff. I just fabricated it all out of scrap lying around the shop. I put 4 pictures on my profile page it you want to look at the reinforcement system I came up with. I still think I will get some heavy turnbuckles and replace the solid rods.
