Cool - folks have a great time up there riding around on the ATVs. I'll try to get an updated copy of the ATV map - the one I have is a bit garbled. The trails are all levels of difficulty - some really good climbs, and some that are great for beginners.

Cafetbird, been looking, how many trails, how many miles, three day rental? Looks nice, enough trails for three days worth of riding? Thanks, my group is planning a trip for spring on a long weekend.

Man, there are trails everywhere - a weekend is no problem. There are, like 120 miles of trails or more, some of them well marked, some of them sort of ad-hoc.

How big a group are you talking about? I recommend it for 4 - 6 folks w/ ATVs. If you have more, I have a friend that can probably rent you a second cabin too.

Thanks,

Scot

Gotcha, stemcell.

If you want, you can email us at jomo@wilkes.net to discuss further! The cabin will fit that many, with the futons and sleepers, but it would be maxed out. We usually ask a little extra for that many folks, so lets discuss the details?

Thanks,

Scot

Hi RocketDeerDog:

Thanks for the questions!
The trails are on private property, so the rules are established by the community. There are community rules, and reference to N.C. Session Law 2005-282 on ATV use. BUT, the community is pretty flexible on the application of them. They want to make sure everyone rides safely and respectably.

There are lots of gravel and dirt roads that would be pretty good for kids riding. The way the trails are in Buck Mountain, the area is steep and rocky, and many trails are pretty steep. It is a good idea to wear a helmet.

Contact me directly if you have any more questions.

LOL - maybe all the rules scared folks off...

Maybe this helps answer your questions:

ATV Riders - 3/24/2007

The idea is to get folks riding responsibly, there is some leeway.

The laws on atvs in NC make it impossible for anyone with children under 8 to enjoy the sport. They cant ride on their own and they cant ride with their parents unless they have a 2 up atv. I dont know about most but I would have to sell my kids to be able to afford a couple of those 2 ups,($9,000 each?) I just dont have it. Maybe this is the plan, if you cant get kids involved in the sport perhaps it will go away! I would love to take my family to your cabin for a weekend and ride. Saw your ad on ebay, looks nice. But until my kids are all (3 of them ages 5, 3, and 2) over 16 I'll have to keep riding around the house.

Umm - what is your definition of "2 up"??? I ride many motorcycles. A motorcycle that has a saddle that accomodates 2 riders and footpegs is a "2 up" bike. I assume that similar applies to ATVs... though you don't have rear footpegs, rather a foot platform.

I think you are applying this definition to imply that you must have 2 seats..... don't think that is the intent of the law.

You'll see in the pic that folks ride their kids 2 up here - in a traditional sense....

Well my wife and I both have full size polaris atvs which could easily accomodate 2 rides, especially if one is a child, but they both have stickers that say this atv is not for 2 up riding. I believe that is how the new atv laws read also, you cant ride 2 up unless and atv was specifically built for it example is the polaris X2. If this is not correct someone please may know better.

No, you are dead on, and with most trail systems, the 2-up atv has to be an approved model because of people adding the rear cargo box/seats beleiving that it is a legal way to safely carry two people. Right now I beleive the only 2-ups approved aout there are the Polaris, Artic Cat, and Can Am, but even those half to meet certain width and wheelbase requirements. Sorry about butting in, I'll shut up.

I spoke with one of the members of the board on the mountain - and they are not rigid on the two-up rule.

Their major concern is that everyone rides safely. A few years ago, a person was killed up there - riding too fast and lost control and flipped their ATV. At that point, the state rule was included in the rules and regulations.

FYI - here is what the last folks that say:

What a great weekend! We were so relaxed and felt right at home. The cabin is unbelievably comfortable and feels like a place you would always want to go back to. We went mainly for four-wheeling. The trails are so much fun. There are trails for both kids and adventurous adults. People are very friendly and you run into families who like the same trails. There is a beautiful waterfall which you can hike up to the top. Kids swim down at the bottom, if not too cold. We absolutely recommend this cabin to anyone. It is beautifully decorated and we loved the fire pit outdoors! Kids had a blast roasting marshmellows and telling tall tales about big bears! Also one more great thing about cabin. There is a downstairs playroom with twin beds. It is perfect for the kids to go and have their own space if you know what I mean!
Vacations are supposed to be peaceful for us parents too! You won't regret staying there even if you are not a four-wheeling family!
