eBay. Prices are always really good on slightly used stuff, and face it, your brand new gear will get dirty after the first time you ride anyways.

I got my last pair of Fox Forma Pro boots on eBay for $100, and they were not even broken in yet.

Around this time of year into the fall, prices will be especially low since MX season is well underway. You want to avoid buying in March through May because of the demand for gear.

Welcome to the forum ElderGeek!

sorry for not welcoming you earlier.

I forgot to say that I usually buy the closeout specials from motosport.com. They have some awesome deals on Alloy gear. I had never heard of Alloy before but Im very impressed with the quality and overbuilt construction. I like as much padding between me and the ground as possible.

Dress for the crash, not the ride.

mywifesquad, yup!! I agree with padding between me and the ground.

I need to school up on riding gear. Helmets I know about but pants, protectors and boots I know little about.

Quick question, I will be riding in the desert and dunes most of the time. Are there styles or brands that "breath" more than others?

I can always layer up when it gets cold. Well cold for us . Don't want to buy something that will feel like a ski suit when riding.

Rupp Enduro!! Haven't seen one of those since adolesence! What a flashback....

I was just at the motosport page and they had a big clearance section. No Fear was the lowest price I saw. For about $100.00 you could get pants, jersey and gloves. That was normal gear, they also had some vented gear that would be great for hot weather. I have been thinking of getting some vented gear myself for the rare time I ride in the dirt in the summer. for chest protector's I like THOR, they seem to be more of a full coverage type to me. Possibly more restrictive but I will trade that for more padding between me and the ground. I will always recommend Alpinestar boots. I think the Tech4 is the low budget model right now.
I should get a pic of that machine on my page. Right now its a very nice rolling chassis, waiting for me to rebuild the 4hp Tecumseh engine. Very for those of us who remember.

OK, Been busy looking at quads. I have verbally bought one to be finalized Tomorrow night.

2006 Yamaha YFZ 450 [Nerfbars, Jet kit, air filter kit, 6-pak rack, quick release flag mount, shock covers, very clean.]

It's a "wifes quad" that was lightly ridden.

Anyway, Time for the riding gear.

For a refresher I live in Phoenix, I will be desert and dune riding mostly with maybe an occasional trip to northern AZ.

I am finding motosport.com does not carry my boot size in all lines. (size 11 or 12 depending on how they are cut)

Being on a quad with a nerf bar, do I need the over the calf boots or can I get away with "shorties"? I'm thinking I would like the shorties better seeing as how my feet should not be scraping the ground like on a two wheeler. And I like a 'Real' tread, in case I need to push/pull it out of some mud.

Will over the calf "athletic socks" work or do I need the "riding" socks listed on the sites?

Some have mentioned that certain boots do not give you a 'good feel' for the shift lever. Is this 'cause they are not broke in?
Are riding boots stiff in the toebox by nature?

Some boots also have "bootie-liners", do I really need these when buying these brand of boots?

What are your thoughts on these Boots:
Price Range: around $150

AlpineStar

ARC I like the tread on these.

Fox OffRoad Tracker

On to pants. I have been told I need leather or other non-meltable liner on the inner knee area. Won't melt on the header! I have also been told to watch what material is used on the inner pant liner if any.

What material do I stay away from?
What material do I want?
Do all riding pants have an inner liner?
If no liner do I need to wear anything under the pants? (besides undies obviousely)

Price range: $50 to 90
(fat boy size 36"x32")

Your thoughts on these:

Shift - Strike

No Fear - Spectrum no leather inner knee

MSR - Revolver

MSR - NXT looks like it has it all.

The jersey selection will be dictated by the pants selected. Unless I am missing something the all are about the same as far as materials and venting, with venting being in the higher priced versions.

I just found this site with package deals. rockymoto.com. I haven't run the math, but it looks like a possibility especially the AC gear.

Also trying to find riding gear that is more subtle, and not looking like a "Wanna-be Pro Racer" is proving to be difficult. for example I am getting this helmet because I am very familiar with Simpson, Simpson fits the shape of my head and it's just WHITE>

Thanks you for all your help!! I have learned alot from these forums!!
