I was listening to the JOHNBOY AND BILLY SHOW, and they were talkin about a city in NC talkin about passin an ordanace that would no longer allow citizens to carry an unconcelled pistol. They could still carry a concealed handgun, just not on thier hip in plain sight. That kinda suprised me that there are places that you can carry an unconcealed gun.
Even in Alabama, one of the most lax gunlaw states, you have to carry your gun concealed. Thats the only way I would carry anyway, becouse I wouldnt want the attention of carring a gun on the hip.
What the laws in your area? Especially if you have an unusual law.

No unusual laws here. We probably have the same laws as you or other "southern" states do. There is a list of states that allow us to carry a concealed weapon in their state(if we are licensed in our own state). The one big thing here is to immediately tell the officer you have a gun and license if you are stopped.

I can carry a weapon unconcealed (not brandishing) up to the sidewalk in my yard. Once across the sidewalk, it becomes illegal. With a CHL license, you would just have to cover the weapon when stepping off your property.

Montana has the most open gun laws just about. I think you can still carry unconcealed here. I was in a restaraunt once (20 years ago) and this old cowboy all dressed up comes in with a pearl handled 6 gun in the holster, walks in and sits down for dinner. Even here that caused a bit of a stir among the waitresses, but just for a minute. I thought it was cool.

Here in NC a permit to buy a handgun "gives you the right" to carry that gun in open view. However, the police will tell you that if they see someone carrying unconcealed, they will find something that you have done wrong. If you have a concealed carry permit, you CANNOT carry in the open. Technically, it is legal to carry in view if the gun is legal.

Yea Shady your right, in Montana you can carry un-concealed without any problems. You can't go into banks, federal buildings or schools. To carry concealed you need to have a carry permit, this allows you to do the same only concealed, stil not in the above mentioned buildings and you want to mention it to a patrolman immediatly if stopped.

This site lists all legislation regarding hand gun carry on a state by state basis:
http://www.packing.org/
Here's the NFA info by state:
http://www.mp5.net/info/sbsconr.htm
In my state, Oregon, a CHL (concealed handgun license) holder may also carry on an open basis. But that just gets everyone excited and attracts what could be unwanted attention, so why bother if one has a CHL?

Here in St.Charles county Missouri......We can get a concealed weapon permit, But you arent allowed to carry it in any public place....and they left the laws of engagement so WIDE open that even in a self-defence situation, you are still wide open to get hung! .....my thoughts are this......If for some reason I FEEL I need to carry a gun with me because I feel unsafe. I going to do it anyway! People were so proud when the permit finally got voted it...we voted in a right ...that we should have NEVER LOST IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!!.......my 2 cents

I have a colorado concealed permit. Colorado does allow open carry, but you must be careful where you carry.. Denver residents may get "shocked and dismayed" on seeing a firearm, and that would be enough to cause a problem. Where I live, it would not be a big thing. We can carry a loaded hand gun in a vehicle with a bullet in the chamber concealed without a permit. We can also carry a rifle with the magazine or other type device holding ammunition loaded, but without a bullet in the chamber without a permit. concealed in a vehicle. My "back yard" goes into the national forest, and I rarely go up the mountain without being armed, as there are bears and cougars there. The chances of meeting a big cat are fairly slim during the day, but there have been large bears on my front and rear deck, so...

Here on the left coast you can get a concealed permit, which is pretty amazing as it is so liberal here. I am not a resident even tho I own a house here, so I cannot get a concealed permit. I do not plan to become a resident, as the income tax rates here are too high. As it is I pay about $10,000 a year in taxes for my house. I plan to keep my Texas residence as long as I can since there is no income tax there.

I have heard there are places that you can carry an unconcealed gun, where it is illegal to carry a pocket knife, mace, or stun gun.
On another note: In Pittsburgh, a few recent shootings involving "Scary black guns" has made a push to ban certain types of guns again. (Thinking that will stop violence?)I believe any restriction on weapons is an infringement on our freedom. I like to be able to chose the right tool for the job. I don't need somebody else telling me what to use to protect myself and others.

i thought every one in the states had the right to carry unconcealed/on the hip. Its the 2nd amendment and OUR constitutional right. The right to bear arms. short story; my uncle is a police officer in a small town andd walks into wal-mart. the door greeter says "excuse me sir, you can not carry a gun". as he turns towards her she sees he has a badge on,in regular everyday clothes. she then says "Oh ,im sorry i didnt know you were an officer". he replies " it doesnt matter if im a police officer or not, every U.S. citizen has the right to carry, its our right". she said sorry sir and that was it.. well since then missouri has passed the concealed law, so now you can carry concealed. Of course every where you go someone doesnt like the fact that you may have a gun on you and tries to tell you ,you cant have it. some instances you cant. prohibited in certain places. im not trying to be a smart a$$, that was my understanding. please, anyone correct me if im wrong.

I stand corrected. I recently ordered a book about the gun laws of the 50 states. In most areas it is still legal to open carry. I was suprised by what I read. There are few places that I cant have my handgun, even if it requires me to carry it in the trunk of my car. The only places where it is just about inpossible to posses a handgun is New Jersy, and Washington DC. I was also supprised that Vermont has the most lax gun laws in the nation. Almost total freedom there. No carry permit required, open carry allowed, practically anything. With the election closing in, and the congress being controlled by the Democrats, I fear what a liberal president could bring to our law abiding citizens.

call me an idiot but if someone was sitting next to me in a resturant or where ever, I would rather see thier sidearm displayed - I would at least know what i'm dealing with then.
to me..concealing is hiding and is worse than displaying. Think about this - ten people in a convienent store, all "displaying" handguns on thier belts - ya think some yahoo is going to try and rob it?????
the laws today are F'D...........this is the kinda crap laws that got us into half the messes we are in NOW
tell me.............your walking down a dark alley with your woman looking all sexy..........uh oh here comes a mugger OH DAMN he notices your side arm - what do you think happened next.................................. Now try this without displaying.
same with cops...............are you less likely to speed if theres a cop every 100 yards??? I dont know maybe I'm the one thats not thinking straight, but it doesnt feel like it
whatever.................laws are written by frickin self-ritious idiots that have nothing better to than take charge of something they NOTHING about

I'm sorry my first post here is a one where I disagree, but....in NC the open carry law, and the concealed carry law have no bearing on the other each other. A permit is only required to purchase a handgun, not to carry openly. The laws about carrying are similar for open and concealed, but not identical. Handguns are prohibited on Federal property, court houses, financial institutions, educational facilities, where alcohol is served, etc. where concealed or not. If a business has a sign that states "no concealed weapons" you may not carry concealed, but you may be able to carry openly in the same business. If the sign states no weapons allowed, then thats what it means, no weapons, concealed or openly carried. There is no "registration" of fireams either. The Federal form that you fill out when you purchase a firearm is the only place the serial number of the firearm is recorded. It is convienent that the concealed carry permit will suffice as a background check when buying a firearm. If the gun store clerk knows his laws, he will not ask for the information for an instant backgroud check, if you can produce a carry permit. That applies to rifles and shot guns as well as handguns. "Concealed" in NC means "on or about the person, with in arms reach, and readily accessable. There is no mention of loaded or not. If you have a handgun locked in your glove box, it is not "readily accessable", therefore not a concealed weapon. If you don't have a concealed permit, and you have a firearm in your vehicle, it must be on the seat, or somewhere in plain sight if someone walks up to the vehicle or not "readily accessable". There are lots of laws I didn't cover here, and don't have the time or space.

In Colorado CCW permits run by county, but no county denies another's so it's no different than a state-wide permit. Of course the usual suspects of restrictions apply, schools, courthouses, etc.
Sadly the list grows. One man here carried a shotgun to the town hall meeting. Nothing illegal, not even a single law broken- yet there was mass panic and SWAT was deployed. The next day all public venues of any sort got banned.
It saddens me because it wasn't that long ago that armed people were a common sight. Most of the male population, and quite a bit of the female, all carried firearms or at least were not even effected by their presence.
In this short time we've gone from people carrying a gun as a part of their daily clothing to SWAT being called when a guy is seen in town with a gun. To me, this fundamental shift in the American culture is sad and pathetic. I call this The Pussification of America.
I also have issues with the entire CCW permit concept. On two grounds-
First- it's unconstitutional. I have a right to bear arms. Nowhere is there a restriction on that right such as HOW I have to bear them. Open or not- it is not to be inferred from the bill of rights what is not written into it.
Worse, to carry concealed I am forced to pay a fee. I liken this to being forced to pay to be allowed to vote. Voting is a distinct, inalienable right as is the right to bear arms. If someone stopped you at the door of your local voting location on November 3rd and told you there was a $100 cover charge......you'd be pissed!
To be made to PAY for excersizing a RIGHT is just wrong on every level.
Second- it's silly. It's completely backwards. If you carry openly and society must deal with your choice to be armed, then it should have a re-assurance that you are at least qualified to be carrying (and why I support mandatory classes for carrying a gun) so THAT is what should require a permit. Much like we trust cops to openly carry weapons because they have had at least some amount of training and passed a background check.
If you carry concealed, ideally no one will ever know and therefore enforcement is all but pointless. If I carry my revolver concealed all day and no one knows- then making me pay for a permit to do so is not only unconstitutional (see above) but flatly dumb. It is making me pay to be a law abiding citizen.
That's just my .02 on it. I've carried concealed most of my adult life in a couple different states, and it's never made sense to me why it's concealed carry that requires a permit that'll never be checked.

Since Michigan passed the shall-issue law you only have to jump through a few hoops and take a couple of classes to get a Concealed Pistol License. If you haven't commited any of dozens of misdemeanors in the last 3-8 years, that is. That includes too many traffic tickets, and a bunch of other non-violent offenses. When you get your CPL you can carry all the usual places, except Federal buildings, schools, and places that make 50% of their income on alcohol. Before you go into a bar or restaraunt, you have to try to figure out if they make the majority of their money on food or booze. I guess they think you will do something stupid if OTHER PEOPLE are drinking. We have reciprocity with all other states that will recipricate with us. So if your state honors a Michigan CPL you can use yours here. There is no open carry except while hunting. They used to have a hunting and target CPL so you could only carry concealed while legally hunting, nice when the weather is crappy, but they did away with that. Now it's all or nothing.
